VSFMA Field of the Year

The Virginia Sports Field Management Association (VSFMA) recognizes its members and their colleagues for their dedication to providing safe, playable sports field conditions.

Applications for the VSFMA Field of the Year Award are due on October 1st each year and will be evaluated based on a 12-month calendar cycle from October 1st through September 30th leading up to the entry deadline. Applicants must be good standing VSFMA members.

Applications will be judged based on a number of factors to include intensity of field use, staff size, budget, and challenges. As applicants will not be judged solely on the overall aesthetic look of their field, applicants are encouraged to show the good, bad and ugly throughout the year. 

The winning teams will be determined by November 1st and presented at the Annual VSFMA Symposium. They will receive a field banner, plaque, press coverage, and lunch for their team (up to 10 crew members).

Information Required:

  • Name of field and facility

  • Name of the field manager

  • Name(s) of staff

  • Nominator’s name (if different than the field manager)

  • Contact information including name, title, address, phone number, and email

  • Type of field (i.e. baseball, football, multipurpose, etc.)

  • Skill level of athletes using the field (i.e. professional, high school, community, etc.)

  • Age of field

  • Describe any recent field renovations

  • Number of events held on the field during the year (an event is any field usage including practices)

  • Include the types of events

  • Describe the soil composition (i.e. native soil, sand-based)

  • Describe the grass type (i.e. bluegrass, ryegrass, mix, etc.)

  • Describe the drainage system

  • Describe the method of field irrigation

  • Provide the annual budget for the field

  • Outline the annual maintenance program for the field

  • Provide any field challenges faced during the year

  • Explain why your field deserves to be recognized as the VSFMA Field of the Year

  • Include color pictures (10 maximum) of the field from various angles
